Oh, Joy! A New Toy!

I had planned to do some housework today, but how can I when THIS arrived today!

I have wanted one of these Singer Featherweights for quite a while, and I finally had the chance to buy this lovely girl, "Olive" from fellow Teddy Bear Artist Cathy Forcino. In addition to making lovely bears, Cathy finds vintage Featherweight sewing machines and fixes them up for fellow crafters and collectors!

Olive came so carefully and cheerfully wrapped, I felt like it was Christmas morning!

There is nothing wrong with my "old" sewing machine--in fact I love it, and would not trade it for anything~it sews perfectly and it is sentimental. My mother gave it to me, and I learned to sew in this machine. It was the first thing she bought with her first paycheck from her first "real job" and she made clothes for me on it when I was a baby!

But "Susan" (since Olive came with a name I feel compelled to give this old friend a name too!) will be tucked into her table for just a bit while I learn about my new machine.

I expect I will use both machines. I love that Olive is portable! Although "Featherweight" is a bit of a misnomer as all of these older machines are a bit hefty with their metal geers, she is much lighter than Susan and comes with that neat case.

No playing now, though. I must get back to house cleaning, but I have something to reward myself with when it is finished! Some new fur came this week too! SEW exciting! (Yes, I know I am a nerd!)

Ooo, I'm so excited for you! I got a Featherweight from Cathy named April. I love her! But I need to find a way to sew my bears with a 1/4-inch seam allowance; the presser foot is only 1/8 inch. I'll find a way eventually! Please let us know how you love Olive when you've had a chance to play. :o) And of course, Susan has the place of honor; it's neat that she was your mom's.

Oh you lucky, lucky lady. Someday... for me, this is on my wish list. Does that make me a nerd too?

I hope you will give us the down low on how your new toy sews, how does it stack up to your old favorite?

I am so excited for you. I hope it sews for miles and miles, and makes beautiful teddy bears.

Your new Featherweight looks wonderful! I've had mine for quite a while now and I love it. I love the quality of the stitches it produces and how small it is. If recollection serves, mine was made the year I was born, so I try to treat it with care and love. I use mine if I need a machine away from home and when my Silver or Bernina machines go away to be serviced. Is it bad to have three sewing machines? The Silver is a longarm machine and weighs a ton! I cannot cope with the prospect of being without a working machine - particularly when deadlines are approaching.

Absolutely love your Featherweight Tami! I almost succumbed to a vintage Singer myself a few months ago, but it wasn't quite as beautiful as I wanted it to be, so I left it for someone else to enjoy ... mine is out there waiting somewhere and one day, we'll find one another, lol!
